Chlorate cell made from a shot glass, 2 AA Heavy Duty batteries and an old ATX power supply. Electrolysis of NaCl solution to form NaClO3 which is then added to KCl solution and temperature reduced to ~0deg C. Obtained KClO3 reacted with Mg.

A reaction of potassium chlorate with starch. It was initiated by a drop of concentrated sulfuric acid onto the mixture. Chlorine dioxide, first formed from the acid and the chlorate, caused the ignition of starch at the point it was added, which then ignited the rest of the mixture.

70/30 mixture of potassium chlorate and sodium benzoate are mixed. When packed into a small casing and ignited, it whistles and flares out the end like a rocket. Potassium perchlorate is suppose to be used for this reaction but I used chlorate instead.
